According to the United Nations, 70% of the 1.3 billion people living in conditions of poverty are women; and in urban areas, 40% of the poorest households are headed by women. Also, 80% of those displaced by climate related disasters and changes around the world are women and girls.
In spite of these challenges, and deficiency of required opportunities and support due them, women (who constitute half of the world’s population) have continued to play significant roles in driving climate action and other positive developmental changes around the world.
In view of these enviable roles and sustained demonstration of strong character to impact in various capacities, we join others today in celebrating all women especially those committed to leading and bringing about visible impactful change in climate adaption and mitigation, even under the burden of the impact of climate.
