Despite global efforts towards lowering the burden of malaria, malaria has continued to have a devastating impact on the health and livelihood of people around the world.
Though it is a preventable and treatable disease, there were still an estimated 241 million new cases of malaria and 627,000 malaria-related deaths in 85 countries in the year 2020. Of the deaths, more than two thirds were among children under the age of five living in the WHO African Region.
For these reasons, it remains pertinent to work together in utilizing all pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical innovations that could aid in the reduction of the malaria disease burden; as no single available tool today will solve the problem of malaria.
As we mark the World Malaria Day today, we remain committed to actions aimed at reducing the malaria disease burden, and other joint efforts key to the total and eventual eradication of malaria.
Malaria, we must defeat!
