Globally in 2022, according to the World Health Organization, an estimated 249 million malaria cases were recorded with 608,000 malaria deaths. Disproportionately, the WHO African Region accounts for about 94% of all the recorded malaria cases and 95% of deaths – with children under 5 years of age accounting for about 78% of all malaria deaths in the region. Also, just four African countries accounted for a little over half of all malaria deaths worldwide of which Nigeria accounted for 26.8% of them.

World Malaria Day

This shows that right to quality, timely and affordable services to prevent, detect and treat malaria is still not a reality for all. Inequities in access to education and financial resources, pregnancy which reduces a woman’s immunity to malaria, displacement, climate change and humanitarian crisis all further exacerbates the risk to malaria.
This day, as we commit to accelerating the fight against malaria, let’s end all forms of discrimination, practice community inclusion in health decision-making, draw health care close to where people live and work, and address all other factors that increase malaria risk for a more equitable world.
Happy World Malaria Day!
